On the night of the 1st of October 2015, the community of El Cambray II was partially buried by tons of material that slid down from one of the surrounding mountains. The landslide fell on 125 houses and 280 people died, many members of the same families.

The location of the neighborhood had been flagged at high risk of landslides by governmental authorities, but the Municipality of Santa Catarina Pinula, where El Cambray II was located only 10 kms from Guatemala City, failed to take action.
