Flying Pole of Cubulco
The traditional dance of the flying pole is celebrated in July in Cubulco, Baja Verapaz, territory of the Achí, one of the 22 Mayan indigenous peoples in Guatemala. The origin story of the dance is found in the Popol Wuj, the sacred book of the Mayan people. The tradition involves music and dancing, costumes and it concludes with two dancers that climb up to the top of a pole while tied to ropes, unraveling themselves as they turn until they reach the ground.
